Description
-
The stock of this full armor crossbow is made of reddish-brown fruit wood. The top is completely covered in bone, and the surface is decorated with scrollwork and frameworks, as well as depictions of fruit and masks. The thumb groove used to guide one’s hand placement on the crossbow is recessed and engraved in a checkerboard pattern. The underside is decorated with depictions of engraved trophies, masks, fruit and braided patterns. The surfaces in between are decorated with inlaid masks, musical instruments, and fine tendrils amidst dot decoration and thread ornaments. At the back, a standing warrior in armor with a sword and shield can be seen. On the left side of the stock, an elaborate scene of cuirassiers engaged in a battle is depicted in bone inlay. The right side of the stock shows similar scenes of war in bone inlay. All depictions take place against a background with finely inlaid dot, floral, and diamond decoration. A shiny butt cap is additionally secured with four bone nails. Yellow paint covers the binding and the binding block. The blackened bow is bound together with the saddle wood and the stirrup; a thick piece of leather is placed around the center of the prod. Pieces of leather are placed under the string loops on the prod. Blue wool tufts are attached to the protective braid made of thin yarn and to the binding.
