Description
-
A full armor crossbow with a cheek piece on the left side. The underside is curved where the prod meets the stock, while the stock points sharply downwards towards the rear end. The bolt holder and bolt rest are missing. The sides of the stock shows intricately inlaid bone work in ebony veneer on each side. Here, hunting scenes with mounted hunters on horses, animals and fantasy figures are depicted amidst fruit, frames and delicate thread decoration. Both sides of the stock have finely engraved strips of bone above and below these decorative figures. These strips of bone are engraved with foliage and scrollwork as well as depictions of fruit. The depiction on the cheek piece shows a society dining and being entertained by jesters playing music. A thick bone plate closes the stock at the back. It is surrounded by an engraved plait pattern, one corner is broken off. At the top of the stock, scrollwork and fruit cover the surface, with three holes arranged centrally behind the nut. At the bottom further representational engravings can be seen. The external steel parts of the simple four-axle nut lock are gold-plated, with the exception of the crook and the handle area of the guard. The blackened prod is marked on the right belly with a quartered circle surrounded by jagged points. It is painted with golden tendrils and depictions of animals on the belly and back, while the narrow sides are decorated with a framed S pattern. Some of the paint is missing.
