Description
-
The stock is made of brown wood (presumably beechwood). It is in the form of an armour crossbow and is covered on the sides with blackened, relief-carved antlers.
On the left side of the crossbow, a crowned figure can be seen on a balcony playing a harp. In front of it, surrounded by several servants, a resting beauty can be seen. Above this, on the upper side band, the text “CADVS” and “DAVID ENTHAI-LIGT SICH MIT BERSABEA SA” is engraved. This is followed by a mounted warrior in the middle of a wooded landscape and two soldiers armed with spears and shields. The next scene shows the mounted man fighting with the two soldiers. Above this is the text “M. CVATIVS” and “HORATIVS COCLES”. On the smoothly ground cheek piece, a dog fights a unicorn amidst scrolls and tendrils. Above this is the text “”ANNO DOMINI 1576 IAR”.
The right side shows a bearded king armed with a sword, addressing three people. The scene is surrounded by columns and curtains, and takes place on a slab-covered floor. Two of the figures each hold an infant. The upper side band is engraved with the text "M. IER KADVS 2 V..." and "IVDITIVM SOLOMONIS C:REG III." The next scene shows two fighting warriors amidst tendrils, behind them a rider charging two fighting warriors. Engraved above are the texts "IVLIVS CESAR" and "OCTAVIANVS AVGVSTVS." The final scene, toward the end of the column, depicts a man approaching a nude figure. Further on, a nude figure can be seen amidst blankets and curtains. Above this is the text "SEXTVS FORCES LVCRETIA." The lower side bands are each engraved with a braid pattern.
The upper surface is sanded smooth and engraved with scrollwork only in the area of the saddle and nut. A thin wooden strip is glued to the upper surface at the rear end of the stock. On the underside, tendrils and grotesques arranged symmetrically to the central axle decorate the surfaces. At the front, in the area of the stock reinforcing rivet, a nude female figure is depicted holding a human head in her hands, with a quartered shield with black and white fields below.
This four-part division is repeated on the butt cap, but here in white bone and dark horn. All reliefs, like the text, are coarsely engraved, while the engravings are more finely executed. The surfaces are heavily worn and show many pressure marks and scratches.
The reinforcing rivet in the front of the stock has a circular setting head; the rivet head is lined with a flower-shaped washer and partially covers the engraved female figure. A closed hole can be seen in front of the fork rivet; the bolt saddle is made of reddish-brown wood. The bolt holder used to keep the bolt in place when aiming is missing. On the simple four-axle nut lock, all external steel parts are blackened.
Also blackened is the steel sheet, which is bound with a piece of thick leather and has marks on the left and right sides. On the left side of the crossbow is either the letters “ICP” or “ICR” with two stars and a cross in a pointed shield. Next to this is quartered circle surrounded by jagged points. On the right is a mark with a pointed shield like the one on the left. The binding material is hemp thread; in places the dark water-proofing is still visible. The string has knotted loops. The dark water-proofing has only been preserved in a few places.

Modifications:
The prod was moved further back over the course of its service life. This can be seen from the fact that the stock reinforcing rivet was also moved back, as indicated by a closed hole and an engraving covered by the rivet head. The string thus intersects the stock far behind the gusset hole. In some places, the bone coverings were replaced, and a piece of wood was glued to the end of the stock.
The wooden strip on the top is an addition that an archer had attached for better aiming. It is possible that the cheek piece was also modified.
