This crossbow is dated to the 19th century and features a robust steel prod stamped with the maker's initials 'J. H. & S.' on the inside. The prod is fitted with a bowstring of twisted cord and retained by further cords. The stock is made of ebonised hardwood, swelling about the nut. The stock is veneered with a staghorn plaque on the top and bottom, engraved with scrolls of foliage, inlaid with staghorn rosettes and a pair of segmental lines on each side. The mechanism features a bone nut, a pair of iron lugs, retains a portion of its trigger mechanism, and is pierced with a hole for a loading rod on the underside.
