Description
-
This crossbow is on display at the Museum of Krakow and it is concluded to have been an infantry crossbow used for stationary defence of a city wall or for sieges which are suggested by its size, mechanism, and lack or decoration or ornaments. This crossbow benefits from later technological advancements such as a movable sight for aiming and a wooden crank to draw back the weight of the bow. This crank and the mechanism it uses, the block-crank mechanism is known as the English Elevator. It also includes an iron stir-up attached to the front of the bow with iron yokes. It also includes grooves for the placement of the bow resulting in faster reload times. The design and mechanism of this crossbow indicate that it was efficient with the ability to shoot a rival from 650 paces away.
