Description
-
This crossbow is currently on display in Gallery 348 in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Its inlay is a combination of birch bark painted white as well as another sort of wood. It contains detailing on its bow which appears to be composite, made from both wood and animal horn. Its width being larger than its length indicates that the crossbow had a powerful but heavy drawback weight which possibly would have been alleviated by the foot
lever found on its end. The bowstring appears to be missing. The artist/maker of this crossbow is stated to be unknown.
Materials/Media Wood, antler/bone, steel, horn, sinew, birch bark (painted), leather, natural fibre cords (possibly hemp)
Dimensions/Measurements Length: 71.4 centimeters, Width: 79.9 centimeters, Weight: 3056 grams
Other notes Credit Line: Bequest of Carl Otto Kretzschmar von Kienbusch, 1977
