These weapons were used for hunting, thus large numbers have survived in good condition which allows for accurate dating and typology. Here the stock is carved with a variety of details that were also used on 16th century Italian furniture. This highlights a great example of what has become know to collectors as Venetian patina.
A comparable example is from the Wallace Collection (A.1046) and is best shown in Edged Weapons, Wilkinson, Fig.115
Overall length: 42 1/2".
Arbalete/ pellet crossbow was primarily a hunting weapon; therefore, it was restricted to nobility and aristocracy. This classic form was most associated with Italy, but used in France as well. The walnut cheek-rest is embellished with a “carved floral rosette and sea shell motif”. The iron fittings are engraved and have some of the original “blued finish” which suggests that it was stored in a hunting lodge/ castle since the time it was used.
